Serving youth ages 12 - 23 in Rockford, Illinois with a specialization in students facing expulsion and juvenile charges.
Helping make beautiful beginnings for at-risk youth, everyday.
History & Who We Serve
Beautiful Beginnings was born out of a deep need in the community, a lack of a resource to reach youth who were choosing violence instead of school. We believe you cannot make a difference in lives of children unless you are willing to locate yourself in the heart of the problem. This year, we will launch our location on 917 School Street in Rockford, in an effort to change the landscape of our community. As we have grown, our population has expanded to include students who feel an alternative setting and learning path are valuable, especially those seeking financial independence and security. Although we work towards transitioning students back to a success in public school when possible and appropriate, we also provide ongoing education to students who choose to stay enrolled full-time at Beautiful Beginnings.
Grades 7th-12th Accredited Middle & High School
Beautiful Beginnings has been offering an alternative educational setting for the youth of Rockford, many of who have been expelled from public schools, a way to get back on the educational track. Students are offered a wide variety of coursework with teachers using a variety of online platforms. Each student works at their own pace taking needed course work. We prepare our students to enter a traditional learning environment again if this is their goal, and provide transitionary plans.
We offer classes for both our students and our parents to support them at any age in achieving their GED. We know supporting our students means supporting their families, and equipping parents is an important initiative we always work towards.
Professional Licenses and Business Owner Model
Beautiful Beginnings does not believe it is enough to give our students readiness for college, and indeed we do not believe that college should be advocated as the only path. We have college course work through Rock Valley, Professional CE hours through Rockford Public Library, collaboration with Community Comprehensive Solutions, internship opportunities with the beauty, plumbing, real estate, music, and clothing industries, among others. What is even more important is that there are opportunities for students to earn an income, create their own LLCs, and to graduate with a job.
Two Sites, One School
Students have two sites, one which functions primarily as a community and learning space on 917 School Street, and one on 309 Mulberry Street where students will create and sell a variety of products from their businesses. Moving between the sites and developing autonomy and freedom are part of the philosophy of treating our youth with respect and developing independence.
Winner of the first Illinois R3 Grant award to continue already outstanding work and to expand the program.
98% of at-risk youth who wish are reenrolled in public schools.
80% of students leave with their own businesses.
If you or a family member believe that this alternative, free, private learning environment would be the right choice for your child, please submit the contact form below and we will reach out with an appointment to register. We understand many students are reluctant to enter the school system again, and we work hard to create a plan which allows for a personalized process.
